The image to the left, which shows all the Earth's surface water in one place, gives you an idea of how big this discovery is. Scientists have found, about 700 km deep in the Earth's crust, a reservoir that holds about 3 times the water volume of the ocean. The water is trapped in a type of blue rock called ringwoodite, a "high-pressure polymorph of olivine that is formed at high temperatures and pressures". How one grocery store is fighting food waste with ugly produce
According to a report by the Natural Resources Defense Council, 40 % of food in the U.S. goes uneaten. Getting ugly fruit and veg into grocery stores and onto plates would go a long way to cutting waste. Intermarché, a French grocery store, is sticking up for the ugly produce of the world, with a new marketing campaign and a 30% price reduction. Three ways this year’s Brazil World Cup is going green
The new World Cup stadium Estadio Nacionál Mané Garrincha has 2.5 MW of solar capacity from 1,500 solar panels ringing the roof. All 12 World Cup hosting stadiums will have LEED certification - a 1st in World Cup history! Bio-digital, interactive Urban Algae Canopy produces a small forest’s worth of oxygen
London-based Ecologic Studio's latest development is this fascinating Urban Algae Canopy Module, which features bio-digitally activated, micro-algal cultivation that is responsive to various environmental factors. The canopy will change dynamically, thanks to various sensors that will react to environmental variables to control the interior flow of water and carbon dioxide, which act as a growing medium for the algae within. Looking for an upcycling project this weekend?
Jenna, Interior Designer at SAS Interiors, shares this tip for upcycling. One of my favorite ways to shop is with a $0 budget. How is that possible? By shopping your home. Take a tour around your house and look for items that you’re tired of. Then with a little creativity, give them a fresh new look. It can be as simple as a coat of spray paint or taking the item and completely changing it’s function. Picture credit: furniteka.com … [Read more...]
“An Estimation of the Number of Cells in the Human Body”
The authors of the paper have broken the body down by organs and cell types. They’ve scoured scientific literature for details on the volume and density of cells in gallbladders, intestines, bone marrows etc, then came up with estimates for the total number of each kind of cell. They estimate, for example, that we have 2 billion heart muscle cells. Adding up all their numbers, the scientists came up with 37.2 trillion cells. Impressive! Picture … [Read more...]
