Many communities around the world have attempted to tackle plastic bag use by implementing bans or fees. The oldest existing bag tax is in Denmark. Passed in 1993, this regulation affected plastic bag makers who paid a tax based on the bag's weight. Stores were allowed to pass the cost on to consumers either in bag charges or absorbed into the prices of other items - resulting in a 60% drop in bag use! The Salamander-Unsung Hero of the Forest
In our fight against global warming, we have an unlikely ally - the tiny salamander! In North-America, they are actually the most abundant vertebrate, and they eat a lot of insects. This is helpful because this prevents these insects from eating as much of the leaf litter on the forest floor. If this leaf litter is left alone long enough, part of it will turn into humus, a process that sequesters carbon in the soil. Because salamanders eat so … [Read more...]
Now here’s a thought…
"Observers at nearly all the recent international conferences tending to the world’s dire challenges regarding environment, economics, and so on, summarize that “civil society is gung-ho for change,” whereas the world’s controlling corporations and governments are dragging their feet. In fact, there is a fear among spokespersons for civil society that decades of their own work may be cancelled out by the comparatively instantaneous actions of … [Read more...]
Fairphones – repairable, responsible electronics
Smartphones seem to be everywhere these days, and they're fraught with both environmental and social issues - from their use of conflict minerals to poor conditions for the workers who make them. A social enterprise behind a new 'ethical' smartphone, the Fairphone, aims to change that by using conflict-free raw materials for the devices, paying the workers who manufacture them a fair wage, and working to set up e-waste recycling programs for … [Read more...]

Enough is Enough
Today, approximately one billion people on this planet live without sufficient nutrition. The recent price hikes in global food markets has affected these people dramatically. At the same time research has shown that on a daily basis, in developed countries, tons of food goes to landfill. Wastage is as a result of over supply by supermarkets and food purchased and thrown away by the consumer. By 2050, the world will need to feed nine billion … [Read more...]
