Vienna and Beijing based design collective Penda have created the "One With the Birds" tent hotel, which uses a modular form of bamboo construction that can be stacked up vertically or spread out horizontally. Penda say "The structure could grow as tall as the trees. We can experience a forest from the perspective of a child climbing a tree, in between the treetops, with the birds ." Photographer Rose-Lynn Fisher captures tears in extreme detail
When she caught one of her own tears on a slide, dried it, and then peered at it through a standard light microscope, Fisher found it fascinating. “It was really interesting. I started wondering—would a tear of grief look any different than a tear of joy?” She says. This idle musing ended up launching a project in which Fisher photographed more than 100 tears from herself and volunteers, including a newborn! Image credit: smithsonianmag.com … [Read more...]
Hows this for upcycling?
The Neverwas Haul is a self-propelled 3-story Victorian House, made from 75% recycled equipment and materials. It houses collections from its travels around the world - oddities of the Jules Verne era including a Camera Obscura! The Haul measures 24 feet long by 24 feet high and 12 feet wide and is built on the base of a 5 wheel travel trailer. We love to see creative recycling and low impact tiny homes. Wonderful! Three ways this year’s Brazil World Cup is going green
The new World Cup stadium Estadio Nacionál Mané Garrincha has 2.5 MW of solar capacity from 1,500 solar panels ringing the roof. All 12 World Cup hosting stadiums will have LEED certification - a 1st in World Cup history! The government in Brazil has begun offsets and has already offset 115,000 tonnes of carbon through 'donations' of offsets from companies that then get to sport a special World Cup 'green seal'. Bio-digital, interactive Urban Algae Canopy produces a small forest’s worth of oxygen
London-based Ecologic Studio's latest development is this fascinating Urban Algae Canopy Module, which features bio-digitally activated, micro-algal cultivation that is responsive to various environmental factors. The canopy will change dynamically, thanks to various sensors that will react to environmental variables to control the interior flow of water and carbon dioxide, which act as a growing medium for the algae within. Looking for an upcycling project this weekend?
Jenna, Interior Designer at SAS Interiors, shares this tip for upcycling. One of my favorite ways to shop is with a $0 budget. How is that possible? By shopping your home. Take a tour around your house and look for items that you’re tired of. Then with a little creativity, give them a fresh new look. It can be as simple as a coat of spray paint or taking the item and completely changing it’s function. Picture credit: furniteka.com … [Read more...]
This multifunctional cradle becomes a greenhouse when babies outgrow it!
Using FSC-certified local wood and renewable, biodegradable and non-toxic materials, Italian design company Woodly created "Roll," a multifunctional hanging crib on a tripod that can later transform into a greenhouse. The hanging part consists of a birch shell holding a padded nest of wool felt, which both have another life too - the nest can become a storage box, and the birch shell a table for the childs room. Farewell to a brave and inspirational woman – Maya Angelou has passed away at 86
Angelou's life is a shining example of triumph over adversity. When she was 7, her mother’s boyfriend raped her. He was later beaten to death by a mob after she testified against him. “My 7-and-a-half-year-old logic deduced that my voice had killed him, so I stopped speaking for almost 6 years,” she said. From the silence a louder voice was born, and she went on to become an award winning writer and civil rights activist. Picture … [Read more...]
Fresh air – only $845 a jar!
Sometimes, it takes an artist to perfectly make a point. Liang Kegang lives in Beijing, and after a trip to the south of France he returned with something precious - a jar of clean Provence mountain air. To drive his point home, he auctioned the jar before a group of about 100 Chinese artists and collectors and was paid 5,250 yuan ( $845) for it. "Air should be the most valueless commodity, free to breathe for any vagrant or beggar," Liang … [Read more...]
Recycled artwork in Bulgaria
Bulgarian and NYC-based Bignatov Studio envisioned and executed this simple but stunning recycled artwork as a community art project, which was recently realized with the help of 128 volunteers in Varna, Bulgaria. Created to support Varna's bid as European Capital of Culture in 2019, the piece -- titled "Mirror Culture" -- consists of over 6,000 recycled CDs that have been attached by hand to a custom-made fishing net. Suspended in the middle of … [Read more...]
