With the vice-presidential debates occurring tonight, again we have a chance to watch democracy on display, or at least the version of democracy that is practiced in the U.S.
The great bard Walt Whitman had a very insightful thing to say about democracy, and if we were to listen to what he said and put it into effect, perhaps then we would have a true democracy.
Here are Whitman’s words:
“We have frequently printed the word Democracy. Yet I cannot too often repeat, that it is a word the real gist of which still sleeps, quite unawakened…It is a great word, whose history, I suppose, remains unwritten, because that history has yet to be enacted. It is, in some sort, younger brother of another great and often used word, Nature, whose history also waits unwritten.” – Walt Whitman
