Joseph Campbell on the Hero’s Journey and Living a Life Well Lived

Joseph Campbell

To be a Quantum Revolutionary means to be brave, and not afraid to be a hero and go on the hero’s journey. Nor are you afraid of living a life well lived.

To go on the hero’s journey, and to live a life well lived, means to go against the grain of society, to go against tribal thinking and to go your own way, to take the road less traveled. You are willing to listen to your own inner voice that compels you to go towards what you are called to do, to live a meaningful and purposeful life.

Joseph Campbell is well known for his work on the power of myth and the Hero’s Journey, and his writings still ring profoundly true. As a strong believer in the unity of human consciousness and its poetic expression through mythology, through the concept of the Hero’s Journey, Campbell expressed the idea that the whole of the human race could be seen as reciting a single story of great spiritual importance.

Life was meant to be lived fully and purposefully, Campbell said, in a way that allowed us to “follow our bliss,” as Campbell put it. In order to live that life, one had to partake of the Hero’s Journey, a journey sometimes against all odds that was meant to help the traveler find their path and see it unfold until they saw their truth and lived it fully, without allowing anything to hold them back.

The Hero’s Journey was a process to help a person evolve and grow and find their greater truth, a truth that would expand their consciousness and bring them closer to God.

Campbell didn’t define God as an almighty power up there, but as a metaphor:

“God is a metaphor for a mystery that absolutely transcends all human categories of thought, even the categories of being and non-being. Those are categories of thought. I mean it’s as simple as that. So it depends on how much you want to think about it. Whether it’s doing you any good. Whether it is putting you in touch with the mystery that’s the ground of your own being. If it isn’t, well, it’s a lie.”

Here are more quotes from Joseph Campbell on living a life well lived, and the Hero’s Journey:

“You enter the forest
at the darkest point,
where there is no path.
Where there is a way or path,
it is someone else’s path.
You are not on your own path.
If you follow someone else’s way,
you are not going to realize
 your potential.”

“People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.”

“We have to be willing to let go of the life we have planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us.”

“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.”
